About Me

Date: Mon Jun 19 2006 17:49:58 GMT-0500 (CDT)

Hello, my name is Dav (David) Glass. I'm an avid supporter of Open Source Software. Most people know me from my work on the YUI Javascript Library. For YUI 2.x I developed: Rich Text Editor, Resize Utility, Image Cropper & Layout Manager and I maintain the Drag and Drop Utility. For YUI 3.x I redeveloped the new Drag and Drop Utility. I also have quite a bit of code hosted for free on GitHub.

So here is a basic FAQ.

  1. Why the hell is there no "e" in Dav?
Back in April of 2000 I went to get the domain name "daveglass.com". Back then we had to buy domains via email exchanges. While I was in the process of getting that domain a guy named Dave Glass in the UK picked it up before I could. So I removed the "e" and got a domain name. Then I realized that leaving off the "e" would allow me to get my username everywhere (twitter, facebook, gmail, github). After that it just kind of stuck. So now you know why there is no "e".
  2. Can I hire you?
Not likely, I currently work for Yahoo! as a formal member of the YUI team and am very happy on that team. I truly love the work I do and you probably couldn't afford to pay me to leave the team I am on. It would have to be one really, really seriously awesome position for me to leave this team.
  3. Will you help me with project X or Y?
If it involves YUI and does not require an NDA, yes I will help you as best as I can. However, you need to understand that I am pretty busy, so it may take me a little bit to get back to you.
  4. Do you do outside contracting/consulting?
Yes for a fee, but refer to questions 2 & 3.
  5. Will you come speak to my team/club/co-workers?
If the group is large enough and there is enough for me to talk about, then yes. There are some rules.
    1. I will not charge for the talk.
    2. You must arrange for: transportation, lodging and expenses.
  6. Can I call you for support?
You can try ;) All of my public phone numbers are screened. So go ahead, leave me a message :D
  7. What editor do you use?
I use the one true editor: vim.
  8. Do you really own a Harley?
Yes, I own a Harley Davidson, Dyna Street Bob. You can see the pics here.

New Toys

I picked up my new toys this week. I purchased a new Palm TX from Circuit City, I also snagged the GPS Navigator add-on. It's pretty sweet, the Navigator software that was included in the package is made by TomTom. I have only used it once to test it, but it worked like a charm. Now I can take the family out & not worry about getting lost 8-).

Seeing the Redwoods

Today we went on a hiking trip in The Big Basin State Park. We got to see the famous California Redwoods. Let me tell you, there are hardly any words that can describe seeing them. It is really a "you have to see it, to believe it" kind of thing. We didn't stay for too long because we ran into a couple of glitches. First, you have to pay to park at California parks (we didn't know that), so we didn't have enough cash to park. However, we managed to get a spot & where able to take one of the shorter trails. The second glitch was the fact that it was very cold & windy. So we all had to buy some long sleeve shirts. Even then, it was a bit of a brisk walk. We are definitely going back, only the next time we will be better prepared..
